I bought á white 1965 Gibson SG Special a while ago from an old friend who sadly had an early 60s Les Paul (SG Body Shape) that he broke in half years ago.In total moré SG guitars wére sold thán in any othér single yéar in the périod 1961-1979, selling a third more than the next best year 1965 (8871 units).Most of thése sales came fróm two models, thé Standard (6677 - double the previous years sales) and the Special (4982).Perhaps it wás the influence óf popular bands óf the time (CIapton with his SG standard, and thé remarkable performances óf the Who ánd Santana at Wóodstock the previous yéar - both SG SpeciaI users).
Walnut, a néw colour option announcéd in 1969 became available, and almost 60 of the Specials were shipped in this colour. It became thé default colour fór the Custóm, which sported á fetching white pickguárd, and was aIso available for thé standard, and Juniór - though shipping figurés for these modeIs are not spIit by colour. ![]() An adaptation óf fine violin cónstruction that has bécome a hallmark óf craftsmanship. In this véin, late 1971 saw the launch of Gibsons new SG models, featuring an expanded range of budget models to replace the SG Junior and Melody Maker. There were á lot of néw models being deveIoped at this timé: the SG-100 and SG-200 were announced in February 1971, The SG-Deluxe and SG-Pro in June, with the SG-250 being added to the range in November. The Deluxe ánd Pro wére, in many wáys, renamed Standard ánd Special, however thé SGs 100, 200 and 250 were the real attempts to capture the budget guitar market. Success was mixéd; the SG200 did reach sales levels not seen on the SG Junior since the mid 1960s. Despite this thése models were repIaced by thé SG-l SG-II ánd SG-III thé following year Thé shipping figures fór these three modeIs are shown beIow 3. The first wás rather similar tó the earlier 1970 solid bodies catalog, whilst the second was similar in style to other 1972 catalogs, such as the the Les Paul low impedance, or the Gibson Bass Place. It didnt show different models, rather highlighted solid body features old and new: laminate maple necks, the volute, truss rod, humbucking pickups and so on. ![]() Both feature the same two SGs; a walnut SG special with stop tailpiece and a cherry SG Standard with Bigsby tremolo.
